Favorite WOD: I like them all, especially the ones where I am laid out on the floor when done!

2 ½ years
What keeps you coming back?
Coach Sam is the man! I love the box and the community that he has creating. I love the challenge to always try to improve and compete against myself.
How did you ﬁnd CrossFit?
A good friend got me into it about 2 ½ years ago at another box that Sam’s coached at. I was hooked after the first few classes.
How did you end up at CrossFit Aestus?
As soon as my contract was up at the other box, I signed back up with Coach Sam. I don’t believe there is a better coach in the area.
What is your athletic background?
Growing up in Vermont I played Basketball, Baseball, and Hockey, but really excelled at Golf. As a junior golfer I was ranked in the top 5 in the state and went onto make the college Golf team at UNC – Greensboro.
How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle and level of ﬁtness?
CrossFit has helped improve my flexibility and strengthen my core. I had back surgery over 10 years ago and have had challenges with my back. With Sam’s coaching I have been pain free and have been able to do many activities that I would not have tried 2 years ago.
What is the One Thing you have done here that you never thought you could do?
Before CrossFit, I would have never attempted to work on many of the Olympic Lifts including the overhead squat. Coach Sam’s guidance has allowed me to be successful at these lifts by showing how to break down the movements so everyone performs them in a safe manner.
What motivates/inspires you?
I am truly inspired by everyone that steps foot into the box. All levels from beginners to professional athletes can work out in the same class at their own pace and intensity.
What is your proudest CrossFit achievement?
I completed “The Murph” in less than 1 hour last year.
Name one goal/personal achievement that you would like to achieve through CrossFit
I would love to be able to do 10 strict pull ups!
What goals have you achieved in CrossFit?
My first 2 years into doing CrossFit I was able to lose 70 lbs. while increasing my strength and flexibility.
Hobbies/interests outside of CrossFit?
I have always loved to play golf but don’t really have the time for it these days. I’m heavily involved with my son playing soccer and enjoy taking him to tournaments and practices. I enjoy fundraising for causes that are special to our family including 2 non-profit organizations (Autism Society of North Carolina and 3 Irish Jewels Farm).
Tell me about your diet:
I travel about 75-80% of the time, so my diet is unusually all over the place. I have found great success in the Stronger U program of tracking my macros and have lost 18 lbs in 2 months so far.
Any advice for new members?
Everyone that steps into their first class in nervous and unsure of what to expect, don’t let that stop you. I haven’t met a single person that regrets starting a CrossFit program under Coach Sam. Stick with it and you will get stronger, more flexible, do things you didn’t think you would accomplish, and make a ton of friends along the way!
I have known Tom for quite a while. His strength in training almost equals his strength as a family man. He is a dedicated individual who has worked hard to make great strides to reach his goals. He has been an inspirational addition to our CFA Family.
